Even though it is officially summer, there is a cough bug going around which gave me the idea to write this post. Sputum color question is must-asked for coughing patients. Color does matter. Some people don’t have the habit to spit out or check the color of sputum after they cough.
Two major types of coughs below are caused by the external factor. Coughs caused by internal factors are not discussed here.
What if it is clear or white?
If sputum produced is clear or thin white, it means that it is a “cold” cough. It is advisable to stop consuming cold drinks and raw foods until this cough is clear.
What if it is yellow?
If sticky yellow sputum is found after coughs, it is categorized as a “heated” cough. Consuming fried greasy, spicy foods or even coffee would only aggravate the symptoms. Hot tea is okay though.
What if it is green?
Green sputum indicates that there is an infection in the respiratory system. The patient is referred and advised to see his or her doctor right away.
What if there is no sputum?
Dry cough is taxing and usually is a “heated” cough as well which means the same self-care tip applies.
What to eat and drink then?
Hot sandwiches, chicken soup, vegetable with grains, bean soup, or protein cooked simply and mildly. Room temperature or warm to hot water and beverages are great to maintain hydration.
Acupuncture and cupping help cough tremendously. Sputum color question may sound gross. It definitely provides valuable information at your session with your acupuncturist or Chinese herbalist though.
